Hi there! My name is Erik Westlund, and I’d like to personally welcome you to my blog. I take it you’re visiting this page because you’d like to learn a bit more about who I am and why I write about various iPhone and Android apps. So, without further ado, I bring to you, a brief background on Erik Westlund and this blog.

I currently reside in Oklahoma (Go Sooners!) with my wife and our four (yes, four!) amazingly wonderful children. The oldest is on her way out the door, and will be heading off to college in about a year (fingers crossed she picks Oklahoma). My twins are just starting high school, and my youngest is just starting middle school. Which means I still have a few years to go before my wife and I can enjoy freedom again.

My current profession is a personal banker, but I hope to be able to focus all of my attention on writing app reviews in the not-so-distant future. Besides spending time with my family, my most enjoyable hobbies are remote control helicopters, movies, and video games. Yes, I’m still a kid at heart, and I’m not ashamed to admit it! 🙂

You may be wondering why I didn’t include apps as one of my hobbies. The answer is because apps aren’t a hobby of mine. They’re a passion! Ever since the iPhone was first introduced back in 2007, I’ve been enamored with smartphone applications – how they’re created, how they make life easier, and how they make life more enjoyable.

See, I think applications are this generation’s equivalent to last generation’s social networking. They’ve literally changed the way we live our lives. I know they’ve changed mine. Remind me to tell you one day about how one simple app not only changed my life, but saved it as well.

Which leads to why I’ve chosen to review iPhone and Android applications – the reason why you’re here in the first place, right?

I believe that in order to fully appreciate an app, you need to first understand why it was created… and it’s not as simple as stating that this app is a game and that app is for productivity. No, it runs deeper than that. And I believe a lot of app reviewers get it wrong in this respect.

I believe there are four essentials to a great app:

  • It’s original in its concept (or drastically improves an existing concept)
  • It is well designed (and, the design is catered to their specific market)
  • It adds massive value (in the form of entertainment or usefulness)
  • It moves people emotionally (yes, emotionally. Majority of apps fail at this. But when they’re successful, they’re REALLY successful)

My app review blog for iPhone and Android apps was built around the four essentials listed above, and they’re the focus of my reviews. I’ll be upfront and honest with you right now. You won’t find a ton of 10, 9, or even 8-rated apps on my blog. But when you do see one, you’ll know it is truly worth it.

I know not everyone will agree with my ratings, nor do I want them to. The value you find in an app is truly subjective to your own biases and specific circumstances. But my hope is that this blog will help you to not only find great apps without having to dig for them, but also help you decide, by your own standards, which apps are valuable and which ones aren’t.

With that being said, I invite you to step inside this blog, read some reviews, and, most of all, enjoy yourself! Thanks for reading!
